JP: 墨弾き/すみはじき
One of the techniques of underglaze painting, similar to batik-print.
A design is applied on the biscuit face with disappearing Indian ink. Other elements of the design are drawn onto the piece with gosu, then fired. After firing, the Indian ink will have disappeared, leaving white lines in its place. Imaemon-gama kiln is well known for its expertise in the sumihajiki technique, and its pieces are highly valued.
